The experimental performance of the Shakespearian romance is currently being discussed in workshops attended by the Mahan Theater Troupe as well as some non-theatrical students, Dejakam told the Persian service of ISNA.
The play preserves the main concept of the Shakespearean original, but narrates the story in a contemporary style and adapts it to Persian culture, he added.
“We are trying to perform this play using multimedia and minimalistic styles at the same time. Although they seem paradoxical at first glance, we will try to achieve a balance between them during the performance,” he said.
The theater is only one of the possible places for theatrical performances. The on-stage play was neither born in a theater nor was it developed there. The play “Romeo and Juliette” can be performed in either indoor or outdoor venues, the director remarked.
“We do not have any apprehension about the performance of the play since it is experimental and now we are working on methods for performance,” he said.
Dejakam has staged experimental performances of the celebrated plays “Caucasian Chalk Circle” and “Blood Wedding” with theatrical students about five years ago.
